Welcome. If you're here, you're probably in my piano studio, and you’ve come to the right place.
Below is a small library of things we have discussed. Pick the choice that matches your question:
Q: So much stuff. What should I practice this summer?
A: Jazz Practice Roadmap
Q: I read the roadmap and forgot half of it.
A: Here is an infographic: Jazz Practice Cheatsheet.
Q: What are some basic voicings I should know?
A: You definitely should know these Basic 2-5-1 Voicings.
Q: What was that drill with the left hand playing shells?
A: It is the Jason Moran Drill, do it once a week. Or if it’s too easy and you know it already, fugghedaboutit.
Q: I don't know any blues at all.
A: Start with K.C. Blues.
Q: Is it true that I can become a master at jazz piano or improvisation in 10,000 hours?
A: Kinda. With some caveats, taking into account deliberate practice, and the fun factor, and motivation, and... life is complicated! Read about the Ten Thousand Hours Rule, or review those concepts with the Ten Thousand Hours Cheatsheet. Understanding this deeply can help you.
Q: What is the most important thing of all?
A: Having fun with music. Protect that, that is likely the reason that got you started with music. You have to balance deliberate practice, which causes discomfort, with fun. You do not want to lose the sense of fun, not only because it is intrinsic motivation, but also because it is a valuable compass towards your own voice as an artist.
And remember: have fun.
